Chances are, you are going to get attacked by ransom-ware within the next year. You can reduce the effect it has on your business :
- Reduce the chance of malware encrypting all your files by :
- Blocking malware at the firewall with a good scanner
- Restricting user access so that they cannot install software
- Limiting file server access so that users (and malware) cannot even see files they don’t need
- Keep anti-malware software on desktops up-to-date
- Ensure you can restore your data if it gets encrypted :
- Take frequent backups – hourly is not unreasonable
- Ensure the backup files can’t be reached by malware
- Keep backups offsite so there is no chance of cross infection
- Be able to restore to multiple points over the last hours, days, weeks and months
- Check your backups worked!
- Be prepared to recover quickly
- Have server backups that can be run as virtual servers that can be run up in minutes
- Standardize desktop environments so that reinstalling many computers is straightforward
- Keep recent images of desktop and laptop computers so that they can be wiped and re-installed quickly and easily
